Don't Waste Your Money

This edition is almost exactly like the previous edition and is a total waste of money when the 2010 text is so similar.

A good attempt that fails

What makes for a good introductory philosophy text? Minimally, it should present the most important issues in philosophy in a clear, coherent, and easy-to-understand fashion. It should also give the student an appreciation of the history of philosophy as well as the tools to learn how to reason philosophically. During my 30 years of teaching philosophy, I have come across several texts that go a long way toward accomplishing this goal. Sad to say, "Roots of Wisdom," by Helen Buss Mitchell, doesn't do this.
Not that it doesn't try. "Roots of Wisdom" discusses the different areas of philosophy (theory of knowledge, ethics, metaphysics, political philosophy, etc.), talks about some of the main figures in the history of philosophy, and attempts to show the reader how to reason in a philosophical fashion. However, the attempt to integrate these falls flat. Instead of a tapestry, we have a collection of pieces of cloth. The format of this book is both confusing and confused. Despite being intended for introductory students, the prose frequently becomes turgid and boring. Discussions of esoterica often obscures the more important issues.
"Roots of Wisdom" is not nearly as worthwhile a text as are many that are currently on the market.

Textbooks in philosophy are rarely good, and they are rarely necessary. This is simply one of the worst textbooks I've ever seen. It is oversimplified and in many places it is simply inaccurate (i.e., discussions of Aristotle or medieval philosophy; reduction of Nietzsche to The Birth of Tragedy). In addition, it is unconscionably overpriced. There are many other options a professor could assign which would be superior to this text - texts which would cost the student much less and be of much greater value to them. It is irresponsible to assign this, and I myself would never do so in my classes.
