About the Author
Dr. Paul E. Ouboter is the director of the National Zoological Collection and a lecturer in Biodiversity and Conservation at the University of Suriname. He has published on freshwater fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, and on aquatic ecology and pollution, including the books "The Freshwater Ecosystems of Suriname' and "Ecological Studies on Crocodilians in Suriname." Rawien Jairam is a technician in the Vertebrate Department of the National Zoological Collection of the University of Suriname. He has a keen interest in amphibian diversity, and has started his own research on amphibian reproduction and tadpole development.

Not suitable for field use - and barely more for anything else

Horrendous binding - about the quality of most "print on demand" books. Fell apart almost immediately, and this was at home, not in the field. Content of the work is only fair - there certainly is room for a better, more fieldworthy guide with better illustrations that will hold together for at least a week.

About the Author
Robert E. Burtt, a native Pennsylvanian, was born in Du Bois, PA in 1954. An alumnus of the University of Pittsburgh, he earned way more degrees than he will ever use (BA. & two MA.'s). He has done a lot of things that you have to do in order to be a writer (sailor, factory worker, college teacher, coffee barista, etc.). He was raised a Master Mason in Harmony Lodge No. 429, Zelienople, PA in 1995. Mr. Burtt is also the author of "Rome: A Commonplace Book," an exploration of the sights, sounds, and legends of the "Eternal City." Mr. Burtt is married to his wife Grace and lives in Little Rock, Arkansas. His family includes a daughter, Genevieve, a dog Ashes, and a grand-dog, Olive.

A Pennsylvania Masonic Handbook: The Personal Ahiman Rezon

As travelling Masons soon learn, there is no single Masonic ritual - nor is there even uniformity in the Craft's symbolism. This varied tapestry can be a source of immense interest and inspiration for the avid Mason. It can also be quite confusing, for the lesser informed, when a lodge is structured differently or familiar ritual elements are altered or absent.

A Pennsylvania Masonic Handbook, as its title suggests, presents Masonic ritual and symbolism as it is worked within this Masonic jurisdiction. Masons are known to have been active in Pennsylvania from at least 1731. Prior to the American Revolution, there were both `Modern' and `Ancient' lodges operating within the colony. When the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania was ultimately formed in 1785, however, only Ancient lodges remained. This left an indelible impression of Pennsylvania Masonry and its ritual and structure is, indeed, quite different from that practiced in other U.S. jurisdictions.
Burtt's book is designed primarily for the newly admitted Pennsylvania brother. It resembles in tone and substance Allen E. Robert's more general The Craft and its Symbols. The book moves through the basic concepts with which new Masons should be familiar: an overview of Masonic history; the layout and structure of the lodge; the substance of the three Craft degree; Freemasonry in Pennsylvania; appendant bodies. Burtt's style is casual, much as if he were instructing a junior member of his lodge. It is also sprinkled with various `fun facts' that new members might find interesting.

A Pennsylvania Masonic Handbook, no doubt, will have limited appeal for a general readership. However, for those interested in Masonic ritual and at a distance from Pennsylvania, there is some very interesting and useful information contained within this book. Of particular note, and at variance with much of Masonry practiced in the U.S., is the lodge's officer structure, consisting of the Worshipful Master, Wardens, Treasurer, Secretary, Deacons, Chaplain and Tiler and three unique chairs consisting of the Pursuivant and Senior and Junior Masters of Ceremony who are positioned in front of the Senior Warden. Sadly absent is a more complete discussion of the symbolism and ritual elements employed in Pennsylvania. Brunt alludes to the brevity, simplicity, and uniqueness of his jurisdiction's ritual, but fails satisfactorily to develop this topic. Instead, the reader is presented with an overview of Pennsylvania work that largely parallels that found throughout regular Masonry. Still, for Masons who have not had the pleasure of visiting a Pennsylvania lodge, or who take interest in our varied Masonic heritage, Burtt's handbook does offer some insight into one of America's oldest Masonic traditions.

Clear,consice,& informative, clears the "mystery" away after becomming a new Master Mason.
I highly recommend this book to all Pennsylvania lodges to present to the new Master Masons after they came thru the traditional way or by the one day Masonic journey.

Love and Courage

This is the most awe-inspiring book I have ever read. The story of an unbelievable tragedy which struck down the career of a brilliant man, musician/conductor, husband (Clive Wearing) into a life of the severest amnesia ever known. Through this book, written by his wife Deborah, we see a wonderfully, caring, and courageous young woman who loves, cares for and nurtures Clive in the hellish existence which has become their life. She does this for the man she dearly loves and who loves her in return (they are truly "one".) Only when the book is ending, after Deborah has sought solace and answers from a long way from home, does she find what she has been seeking; the ultimate help with which to continue her life with the only man she truly loves. No-one should ever have to go through anything as dreadful as this.....yet without going through this pain, tragedy and loneliness endured by both Clive and Deborah - in different ways, we are privy to the old adage that "Love conquers all". A very personal insight into their lives - a privilege to read, an inspiration to all.

The Saddest Love Story in the World

Deborah Wearing was married to Clive just 18 months when he was struck with viral encephalitis, which destroyed large portions of his brain including his hippocampus. Ever since then, Clive has been unable to make any new memories. Every day, every hour -- every few minutes -- he finds himself waking anew for the first time ever.

Two things he knows: 1) something terrible has happened to him (because he has a black hole where his memory should be) and 2) he loves his wife Deborah.

Every time he sees her, he thinks it's the first time in a long time. Even if it's only been a couple of minutes....

Deborah's heartbreaking story is told with intelligence and admirable strength, as she navigates the unfamiliar shoals of dealing with catastrophic brain injury, a National Health Service unprepared to deal with healthy-but-dependent patients, her own frustration with Clive's 7-second attention span, and the guilt of leaving him with caregivers. She's a remarkably persistent woman to have accomplished all that she has for ABI (acquired brain injury) patients while simultaneously nurturing one of her own.

Clive was an accomplished musician and conductor before the injury (working with among others John Taverner and Michael Nyman), and his musical abilities are oddly untouched by his amnesia. Stories of him sight-reading scores, playing the piano or conducting his choral group send shivers up the spine.

As a former publicist Deborah's writing is fluid, engaging and moving, making this book difficult to interrupt. She rarely indulges in maudlin self-pity, although she would have every right. Clive's story has been filmed at least twice, and featured in two Oliver Sacks books, and from that evidence Deborah if anything understates the tragedy of her situation.

In the last chapter she describes turning to religion for solace, and one can't help but draw parallels between these two anchors in her life.

Lackluster writing as the series continues...

Not a good book at all, but then again the only reason (at least as far as I know) that people continue to read these books is because they started off with Piers many years ago, when they were cute with their little puns and their characters were interesting. Books 1 through around 9 or so were great fluff reading and safe for children.

Recent books, especially those in the 20s to the mid-30s, dealt with a LOT of subjects bordering a bit too close to child pornography (at least, to me) - where little girls would want to know about sex and there would be convenient plot loopholes to allow for them to be older for a short time to allow for it to be "okay." Piers's last book or two, thankfully, deviated from that trend a bit.

This book has much fewer puns, which isn't a bad thing, but you would think the filler for what would have been puns would be better writing. Alas, it doesn't. And while there's no child molestation references/issues, there's plenty of attempted rapes, which is enough to make this book not safe for children. Couple that with uninteresting characters and over a dozen grammatical and spelling errors, you have a flop of a book.

I continue to purchase/read these because I grew up with them and hope beyond hope for a return to the blissful past... and continue to be disappointed. That, and I'm already invested in 38 books, what's one more?

If you're a newcomer to the series, be aware of this decline in quality. If you're an old hat to it, it's more of the same.

Filled with new and old puns and play on words keep you on your toes and the twists and turns of the developing story and its characters draw you in to yet another adventure in the realm of Xanth. Thank you Mr. Anthony for all your contributions to our world of reading, I enjoy them and learn from or at least re-think my opinion on some subjects i thought long settled. I feel honored that you still contribute before you retire to the Brain Pool for a much deserved retirement and rejuvenation !!

The best of the book is the first chapter where we can find a quick summary of different authors about what they consider the most relevant news values. Then the authors present their own selection of news values and analyze some news with that pattern. I do not think that this selection is particularly significant or complete. Nor do I see a criterion related to a hierarchy among these factors: whether some are more important than others. The final chapter on the Litvinenko case illustrates well how stories are constructed in the press.
