About the Author

John McMurry, educated at Harvard and Columbia, has taught approximately 17,000 students in general and organic chemistry over a 30-year period. A Professor of Chemistry at Cornell University since 1980, Dr. McMurry previously spent 13 years on the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

 

David S. Ballantine received his B.S. in Chemistry in 1977 from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1983 from the University of Maryland at College Park. After several years as a researcher at the Naval Research Labs in Washington, DC, he joined the faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Northern Illinois University, where he has been a professor since 1989.

 

Carl Hoeger received his B.S. in Chemistry from San Diego State University and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1983. After a postdoctoral stint at the University of California, Riverside, he joined the Peptide Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute in 1985 where he ran the NIH Peptide Facility while doing basic research in the development of peptide agonists and antagonists. During this time he also taught general, organic, and biochemistry at San Diego City College, Palomar College, and Miramar College. He joined the teaching faculty at University of California, San Diego in 1998. Dr. Hoeger has been teaching chemistry to undergraduates for over 20 years, where he continues to explore the use of technology in the classroom; his current project involves the use of video podcasts as adjuncts to live lectures.

 

Virginia Peterson received her B.S. in Chemistry in 1967 from the University of Washington in Seattle, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1980 from the University of Maryland at College Park. Between her undergraduate and graduate years she worked in lipid, diabetes, and heart disease research at Stanford University. Following her Ph.D. she took a position in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Missouri in Columbia and is now Professor Emerita. When she retired in2011 she had been the Director of Undergraduate Advising for the department for 8 years and had taught both senior capstone classes and biochemistry classes for non-science majors. Although retired, Dr. Peterson continues to advise undergraduates and teach classes.

Mediocre Text

I had to purchase this book specifically for a college chemistry class (required the Mastering Chemistry Online component too). Having used another chemistry book several years before, I was preloaded with knowledge that made me realize how thin this text is compared to others. Much of the content is oversimplified where details are needed. Worst is the number of syntax errors in the chemical equations. Superscript numbers and mismatched charges. These simple editorial mistakes add a tremendous amount of confusion to an entry level chemistry student. Many of my peers spent much time scratching their heads rather than quickly absorbing content and moving forward. If you're thinking about purchasing this text for your own benefit (self-paced learning) skip it and pick up Introduction to General, Organic, & Biochemistry by Bettelheim, et al. If you must use this text for a class, I recommend picking up a second chemistry book to cross-reference. This book does have some strengths (great pictures, lots of good work problems at the end of each chapter, and plenty side-note information that ties the material to real world/healthcare related matters. The errors, however, make it so I can't recommend it to an entry-level chemistry student.

I really enjoy this text because of the organization, the simplification, and the way it uses illustrations to demonstrate important principles. I'm in Organic Chemistry now and also used the same text for inorganic chemistry last term. The only element of the text that is not helpful is all the errors. But, my professor gives us extra credit for finding the errors. So, I suppose it all works out in my favor. Sometimes the errors are typos and other times they're completely off-track. The "Selected Answers" book for the 7th edition is also error ridden. At times it gives you answers to questions that do not correspond to this edition, which is not helpful. But I do recommend purchasing the selected answers manual. It has helped me 90% of the time understand a problem due to the extended work shown or explain to a classmate how a problem is carried-out. Good luck, and have fun!

Where have you been all my life?

This book is absolutely the best auto text written. It's great for the "want-to-be Mechanic" with minimal understanding of how cars work or even if you have no intention of ever picking up a wrench. Without jargon and pretense the authors make clear all that one should know about what goes on under the hood. The chapters are full of color pictures and exploded diagrams that make sense! This book is for everyone-man, woman, and teenager-who can read (at the high school level) and drives a car. It's as simple as that.

A historian of Pentecostalism and a highly regarded denominational leader, Synan has written a summary of the seminal moments in the North American Pentecostal movement. Less a memoir and more of a guide to newcomers, the book presents the rise of practices such as speaking in tongues and healings in the first decade of the 20th century and their spread to Protestant and Roman Catholic churches in the 1960s. The book breathlessly portrays events with tired adjectives such as amazing and awesome and incredible. But its simplicity of presentation is a useful shorthand for conveying big events such as the racial breakthroughs of the 1990s and the phenomenal spread of exuberant worship styles to churches outside the movement. A retired dean of Pat Robertson's Regent University divinity school, Synan argues in favor of the prosperity gospel, though he acknowledges excesses on the part of some of its vocal proponents. He is more critical in his views of the new apostolic movement, in which pastors of large churches declare themselves apostles, as holding the potential for abuse. (Apr.)

About the Author
Vinson Synan, dean emeritus and professor of church history at Regent University, received his Ph.D. in American history from the University of Georgia. He founded and pastored four churches and has held various denominational offices. In 1970, Synan cofounded the Society for Pentecostal Studies, which has given institutional shape to Pentecostal research. He has published numerous scholarly and popular articles and essays and many books. He and his wife, Carol, live in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Good Account of Historical Christian Significance

The author has a first-hand account of actually being in several meetings where revivals were being held, which in itself is remarkable, since very few people are still alive today that can write from a first-hand account. What makes this book stand out is not only that, but its spiritual and historical significance, since most of what Mr. Synan speaks of happened in the early 20th century; things that we no longer see or hear about (unfortunately).

It is quite obvious to the reader that this author has seen and experienced things in church settings that most people only read about and probably will never experience for themselves. He does explain each "movement" of the Pentecostal church, such as the beginning (Azuza Street) to the Toronto, Brownsville and Lakeland Revivals to the "New Apostolic Churches", giving a brief history on each of them--and his opinion as to whether or not they help or hinder the Pentecostal movement. He is concerned about certain things taking place, because he feels that they overshadow God's authority and place the authority in man's hand again, thereby giving man the ultimate authority and thus opening the door to potential abuse--and the false teachings deception and assorted "movements" that he was so cautious to stay away from. Did he succeed? I won't give away the details, but I will say that since he was born in 1934 as he states, he certainly has the spiritual knowledge to "try the spirits" and come to a conclusion for his own life; it may not be the same conclusion for you or me, but it is the conclusion for him.

His style of writing leaves somewhat to be desired; that is to say it is a little on the "dry" side. If you can get beyond that, this is an excellent book and I do recommend it.

I have just finished reading this book, and I highly recommend it for not only reading, but, going in the past where God showed His power mightily when the author was around. Its not everyday that you read about someone who is at this stage writing about an experience that was right in front of him. Pleasant and powerful reading.

Totally Interesting and Captivating!

This book caught my attention because of the experiences of Mr. Synan and his immense research over the years into the Pentecostal movement, etc. He is a thoroughly well-rounded person in his writing and this book is easy to read. I appreciate his history as well as his openness to follow God wherever He has led him.

Another great story!

Another great book! What I love about this author is that she makes such likable characters and there is never a moment when I dislike them.

Memphis is funny, sweet, and sassy. Growing up the daughter of biker, she speaks her mind and is no ones doormat.

Downy was a great hero but suprising because I never pictured him the way he was in the book. He was alpha all the way.

Memphis and Downy meet when there is a holdup at her job. Downy is part of the SWAT team and is the one to protect her during the holdup. Memphis is greatful to the guy who saved her life but never saw his face.
As a result of the holdup, Memphis loses her job and has to move to a cheaper apartment. Where her unknown neighbor likes to keep her up all night "entertaining" his guests (if you know what I mean). One night she goes outside to let her dog pee and meets a good looking guy. A guy who she tells all about her loud neighbor and when they are returning to their apartments, you can imagine her surprise when that guy goes into the next door apartment! How she handles seeing him after that is freaking hilarious. But she figures that her neighbor, Downy, is now going to be more considerate about the noise. That isn't the case when once again she can't sleep because of the noises next door. This time though she was going to confront the neighbor about it because she has had enough. The following confrontation had me laughing.

After that, Downy and Memphis are aware of how attracted they are to one another but Downy is reluctant to take it further because of the major age difference. The attraction is overwhelming though and they soon give in to it. And boy was it steamy because Downy likes his control in the bedroom. But when they enter into a relationship, there are problems. Downy is older and set in his ways. It is hard for him to change and Memphis struggles with that. Yet, both are unwilling to give up because both are developing deeper feelings for each other.

This was a great story. It was funny hot, sweet and had that element of danger to keep you reading. I loved the couple and was glad to see them have their HEA.

I love love love all of mrs vale's books. They just keep getting better and better. I like how all the stories loop together, how we get to "check in" on the other characters that we loved in the other books. Mrs vale is my new favorite author. You keep writing and I'll keep reading!!

Yippy! I found another great author! I am so happy with this series and this author's writing style that I have already pre-ordered the next two. The background plot is an awesome twist, the main plot of each story is so diverse that the characters are really allowed to shine. Holy hotness, are these men hot! I love the sass and relationship development of the females as they struggle to get used to these alpha men and the danger they put themselves in. As a sister to a former beat cop, a detective, and now warrant officer, I so appreciate the spotlight being shined on the heroes of our country. I am one of those dialysis patients, Mrs. Vale and the struggle that brought you to your writing is appreciated very much. I applaud the courage in your "follow through", because your stories are so worth it. Blessings every day to you and yours.

About the Author
Frances Dunn Butterfoss Ph.D., is a well known researcher, theorist, educator, speaker, and practitioner. She is a professor and Division Director of Behavioral Research and Community Health in the Department of Pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). Dr. Butterfoss was recently awarded the EVMS Foundation Chair in Pediatrics.

Practical advice and tools for building and evaluating coalitions

This is the single book you will need to facilitate growth and evaluation of coalitions. This book is excellent for the researcher as well as the practitioner. It is not just another theory book but one that will give you concrete advice and tools. You won't need a PhD to read and use this book but all levels of practice and research will soon find this book to be their favorite resource.

This book is a must first-read book for all of our funded grantees working with coalitions. We provide this book to all funded sites, fellows, and evaluation staff.

Coalitions are a great resource for promoting community change but they can quickly run off-track without the right nurturing. This book will be the resource of choice for anyone charged with the nurturing of a coalition.

Coalition Bible

I was searching Amazon.com for books on coalition building and came across this book last spring and ordered it as I was a part of starting a state coalition for diabetes. And I am really glad that I did. It not only gave our coalition a great working foundation full of wisdom and knowledge from someone who has been there, but I know that we are forming a solid coalition using the tools and suggestions that are in the book. It really has been our coalition bible, and my book is highlighted, underlined, with post-it note tabs through out the book because the information is so valuable and useful. This is the perfect book if you are developing a coalition, would like to develop one, or have a coalition already in existence. You will avoid pitfalls and build a strong coalition following the recommendations in this book. You will not be disappointed with it.
