Grade 2-4–From Crows in Rows to Obese Geese, this title presents a flock of bird-themed rhyming word problems. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division tables conveniently cover the endpapers, and a brief introduction to each mathematical function is provided on the first spread. Miller's festive, computer-generated illustrations give the book a retro look and jazz up the sometimes-forced, occasionally bland rhymes. The word problems are also somewhat repetitive. While this book is undoubtedly more enticing than worksheets, other titles do more to inspire and teach children. Jon Scieszka's Math Curse (Viking, 1995), for example, is a much better choice for making math fun and stretching kids' critical-thinking skills, while Greg Tang's The Grapes of Math (Scholastic, 2001) seamlessly embeds problem-solving strategies right into the (much more fluid and funny) rhymes. Adler's 20 "number riddles" challenge readers to decide whether to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to find the answer. Luckily for younger kids, many of the answers can be determined by simply counting the birds in the colorful pictures. A typical riddle goes: "Scissor-tailed flycatchers / sitting in trees. / "Scissor-tailed flycatchers / sitting in threes. / Three to a tree. / Five trees in all. / How many scissor-tailed flycatchers / sitting in trees?" In small type and upside-down, a sentence below the text on each page tells the process for finding the answer and gives the answer itself. With serviceable verse and attractive computer-assisted illustrations, this will be useful for parents and teachers who want to introduce techniques for solving word problems. Carolyn Phelan

A great math activity for the elementary classroom and beyond

I teach and tutor third through fifth grade. This book was a great problem solving activity in my small group instruction. I covered the "answers" on each page with post it tape, gave each student a white board/marker, and read each page that has a wonderful bird math problem solving question on it written in pose. I asked the students to write the math problem (+, -, X, div) that would solve the query from each poem on their boards, and then we discussed our answers. The students loved it. I then had each student choose one page, illustrate it and copy the poem for a bulletin board which I named "Birds + Spring = Great Math Problems". I also hung a beautiful bird quilt that my students had made on a previous year. Great book, great springboard for all kinds of math instruction. But I also think it would be a great book to cuddle up with at home, one on one with your own favorite little student.

He helps business and government organizations around the world to achieve BI excellence by applying his proven knowledge in Big Data, unstructured information management, agile methodologies and product development. He has held training classes and presented at TDWI, Teradata Partners, DAMA, Informatica, Oracle user groups and Data Modeling Zone conference. He has a background in SEI/CMMI Level 5, and has contributed architecture efforts to petabyte scale data warehouses and offers high quality on-line training and consulting services for Data Vault.

Michael has more than 15 years of experience in IT and has been working on business intelligence topics for the past eight years. He has consulted for a number of clients in the automotive industry, insurance industry and non-profits. In addition, he has consulted for government organizations in Germany on business intelligence topics. Michael is responsible for the Data Vault training program at Dörffler + Partner GmbH, a German consulting firm specialized in data warehousing and business intelligence. He is also a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hannover, Germany. In addition, he maintains DataVault.guru, a community site on Data Vault topics.

Comprehensive Data Vault 2.0 reference manual

This book fills a huge void in Data Vault 2.0 resources. It covers everything about data vault, including data modeling, ETL processing, error handling, metadata, data quality and more, all explained in depth with sufficient examples that can be immediately put to use. Every question that I could think of relating to data vault is covered in the book. It is an excellent reference manual to have on hand while doing data vault implementations.

That said, I gave the book only four stars because there is always room for improvement. I was disappointed after reading Chapter 3, about the Data Vault 2.0 methodology. It appears that the authors threw in a bunch of various methodologies, frameworks, best practices and approaches without clearly explaining how all these parts fit together into a cohesive methodology.

The authors appear out of their depth in the project management space. They incorrectly apply the term PMP (Project Management Professional, a certification from the Project Management Institute) as a best practice. What they probably meant is that the project management aspect of the Data Vault 2.0 methodology is taken from the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge), a project management standard issued by the Project Management Institute.

I also don’t see why the authors included Scrum in the mix. The explanation of how Scrum is applied in mini-waterfall sprints is confusing and contradicting. For example, it is not clear how the Scrum roles such as scrum master and product owner translate into the mini-waterfall sprints. They state that Scrum is used for team coordination/team organization and that the team is self-organized while at the same time they designate the project manager as the person who plans the tasks within a mini-waterfall sprint. It is contradicting that on one hand the product owner participates in the sprints on a daily basis while on the other hand there is no user involvement during the development part of a sprint. In my opinion it would have been better to forget Scrum and just use the Agile Manifesto and its principles in order to bring agile thinking into the Data Vault 2.0 methodology.

Not your daddy's data warehouse!

Full disclosure: I am a huge Data Vault fan and did help with the earlier books (but not this one). This is the Data Vault book everyone has been clamoring for for years. We finally have a book that not only teaches you how to model a Data Vault but also shows you how to load data into a DV as well as how to build Information Marts on top of it to pull the data out for reporting. This book covers the full life cycle of developing an enterprise data warehouse in an agile manner using the Data Vault method. And to top it off, this book has all the details for the enhancements that came with Data Vault 2.0. This book is to Data Vault what Dr. Kimball's Data Warehouse Lifecycle book was to dimensional modeling. If oyu can only buy on data warehouse book this year - get this one.

The most detailed and complete data vault book ever written!

Finally, a Data Vault book that has everything you need from end-to-end to build a data vault warehouse from the ground up!

I've read the Supercharge Your Data Warehouse book from Dan, I've read all of Hans Hultgren's books, I've read and watched DV fundamentals training material, and I never really felt like I fully understood everything end to end. I grasped the big picture and was excited about the possibilities, but working alone after all of that I felt like I still didn't really have the tools I needed to complete a data vault on my own. With this book, I finally do!

This book takes you from concepts to implementation, from beginning to end. There are actual screen shots of how to create databases, what indexes to put on your vault tables, how to create an SSIS package, TSQL code, Master Data Services and Data Quality Services examples, there's MDX code, all of it. And it's not just details to get you to a data vault and then leaving you on your own to figure out the info marts, this takes you all the way to putting data in your dimension and fact tables.

All in all, this is the most complete Data Vault book that's ever been created and it's a fantastic value for the money. It's like 684 pages. Once I started, it was literally 8 hours a day for 4-5 days of plowing through all the information and going back and re-reading and getting more details out of it before I was done. It's not a book you can just flip through in a couple of hours. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone interested in data vault or data warehousing in general.

Beautiful and helpful

Good paper and color, and a good mix of text and beautiful illustrations. This book is a pleasure to read whether you have a piano/keyboard or not.

It has actually helped me learn the basics of keyboard playing and music reading. It's concise and informative, not a lot of fluff. It tells you when you need more practice to acquire specific skills, and it suggests that you take it slow and move forward only after you master those skills. At the end, you'll find a 24-page colored chord dictionary. Very nice and helpful.

I had open the book to page 38 he looked at it and found a error and also found a error in the book on page 38. The book has 192 pages. Will there be more errors??? The piece "Jesu, Joy of Man's desiring" The last stanza of this piece has two errors The author wrights F key for D key and instructs student to use keys 3-4-3 to play for C-B-C. The sale's person pointed out that keys 3-4-3 should be keys 3-2-3. I afraid to go on with this tutorial, there may be more errors I may not find. (errata is needed). I felt it was right to give this book one star.

great content but horrible presentation

This is the first textbook that I've ever purchased (or been given) that was so poorly printed. After two monthes of light use, 75+ pages have fallen out with more on the way. Additionally, as other reviewers have noted, the type is faint and the pictures are grainy. When I received it, I thought it was a copy of a copy of a copy. It's that poor. I called the publisher and unfortunately, this is the only version available. That said, it's a disappointment not only because it cost ~$100 but also because the content is really great and would make a solid reference book for many years to come.

This book seems to be a copy of the original. I am not sure if that's the way it should look. I ordered a new book. The pictures and some of the wording is difficult to read. Have to strain eyes. Very unhappy.

What a rip off. this book was over $100 and the pictures & charts are grainy & look like 3rd generation bad reproductions of a black and white copy. I need it for a class so it's not like I can return it.
