Kruger's life

When I ordered this book, I wasn't sure I would like it. However, Kruger's life is fascinating and reflects well the life and times of the region in Africa.
His life is fascinating. It is a journey filled with incredible hardships and deprivations that are reported in a totally matter of fact manner. Paul was one very strong willed individual that, in retrospect, is amazing.
There are some quite dry sections- I am not strong on reading the minute details of politics- and to the political correct, some sections could cause offence as, like other men of that time, he believes strongly in the superiority of the whites, the primitive lives of the natives, but this displays the attitude of the times.
It is an interesting glimpse of a time long ago.

Super Fun Follow Up to The Allegra Biscotti Collection

Allegra Biscotti, groundbreaking new fashion designer, has a secret. She is actually a 14 year old girl named Emma Rose living in Manhattan. In book 1, The Allegra Biscotti Collection, she is accidentally discovered and asked to keep silent about her real identity. After all, who would take a 14 year old fashion designer seriously? In this installment, Emma is asked to design a collection for an exciting display AND a dress for a swanky Sweet Sixteen Party for a student at her school. With a bumbling new Italian assistant, a best friend who doesn't understand why Emma is so busy all of a sudden, and the mother running the Sweet Sixteen Party all trying to make Emma's life more difficult, how is she ever supposed to get the new collection designed in time?

Obviously this book is written for younger than YA. The back of the book labels it as Juvenile Fiction/Independent Reader, and the content is certainly appropriate for young children. I enjoyed this book because it was so fun, and Emma's best guy friend, Charlie, is hilarious. I would love to be friends with him even now. The descriptions of the clothes are also really fun- I wish there really was an Allegra Biscotti!

One thing that I would change about the book is that I was totally convinced that there was a sinister sub-plot brewing, but the climax was actually a bit of a let down. The "action" ended too soon, in my opinion, but the ending was also really sweet. Sometimes it is nice when everything works out smoothly in the end, and perhaps it has been too long since I've read juvenile fiction of this type.

I would recommend this as juvenile chick lit, and girls around the 3rd-6th grades would probably enjoy it. It was very easy to read, and it might be a good "book club" type book for girl scouts or something- there is definitely a positive girl power message. It could also be a great book to read to kids before bed. Super cute and very fun.

First, it should be understood that this book is less about Bruce Lee than about the author and Lee's influence on his life. During his adolescent years, the diminutive, troubled Miller was probably the only guy on the planet who could have had the hurt put on him by the 98-pound weakling of Charles Atlas ads. Then came Muhammad Ali and Bruce LeeDa large man who moved with preternatural grace and a small man whose punching power almost matched his blinding speed. Both seemed almost to "do it with mirrors" and, reasoned the young Miller, perhaps so could he, as he devoted his life to kickboxing and in the process discovered that he did, indeed, have a life. In his first book, The Tao of Muhammad Ali, Miller already honored one hero. In this one, after telling his story, Miller spends not quite half the book on Lee's saga, gently debunking many myths. The title is deceptive. This fantastic second book by Miller runs deeper than an account of the author growing up as a "karate kid" in the early 1970s. It is equally a study of the nature and role of the hero in popular culture, a poignant and unusual coming-of-age story, and an informative biography of Bruce Lee. As with Muhammad Ali, the author's other childhood hero (The Tao of Muhammad Ali [1996], Lee was part of the select group of athletes who transcended sports to become international pop culture icons. Miller begins the story with his own dismal childhood in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His mother died early in his life; he was a miserable child and adolescent--scrawny, with few friends and no apparent academic or vocational gifts or inclinations. Watching Lee in Enter the Dragon in 1973 changed his life. Miller began a lifelong interest in martial arts and Eastern philosophy. In the late 1980s, he traded his punching bags for a computer and became a writer and journalist, and it is his skill as a storyteller that really makes Tao shine. He beautifully illuminates the pitfalls and triumphs of Lee's early life, captivating the reader. In the end, he dispels many of the myths behind Bruce Lee the man that captivated him as a youth, myths about Lee's ability as a karate god and mystic seer. worth a read for never published details of Lee's death

Aside from Davis Miller's own personal, very poignant, pithily written story in this book, 'Tao of Bruce Lee' should be read for the revelatory details of Bruce Lee's demise, so many of which have never before been revealed. This is the only book of consequence about Bruce Lee -- and a powerful yet abstruse read that should be honoured and learnt from.

Fun reading

"I desperately need something to read", I suddenly recalled when I was heading for my favourite coffeshop. So, I popped in and started to look for something, and this book sort of beamed at me. I got it under the impression that it was a biography about Bruce Lee, but it turns out that it is more a book about Davis Miller's relation to Bruce Lee and how Lee has influenced him. It is very easy reading and a quite nice book, and at page 97 and onwards a small biography about Bruce Lee (or Li Jun Fan, which was his real name) appears. Apparently it is hard to find any books with true facts, Davis Miller claims that this one shall be rather close to truth, and you will learn that Bruce Lee wasn't the lonely martial arts master that one thinks. If you like martial arts in general, and more specifically Bruce Lee, get this book, you will finish it within a couple of days and it is fun reading.

beautifully written personal essay and social commentary

First, this is a book that will unfortunately infuriate many of the most extreme Bruce Lee fans, though Davis Miller is very patient and gentle in his regard for Lee. Those of us who are less prone to accept Bruce Lee's martial arts godness are likely to be deeply affected by Miller's own very optimistic story, his commentary about the dangers of religious literalism and his exploration of the nature of myth, as well as Lee's cautionary tale about the myopic downsides of personal ambition. And many people who have had little interest in Lee or his movies will find that they are thoroughly captivated by Miller's storytelling ability and, in the process, they will find that they gain a real-world respect for Bruce Lee. "The Tao of Bruce Lee: a martial arts memoir" is the story of the influence that Lee had on the young Davis Miller and how the more mature Miller outgrew his childhood idol and finally what he calls the "sociopathic prettification of violence." In this way, and others, this book can be compared to the wonderful film, "Breaking Away," the hopeful account of a troubled teenager who is besmitten with the Italian national bicycling team and how, when he finally manages to race them, he is forced to outgrow his simple-minded romance and become his own (much more interesting and capable) person. Miller writes in a style that is accessible and enjoyable to almost every reader, Bruce Lee extremists notwithstanding. This book is an extension of his outstanding first book, "The Tao of Muhammad Ali," and since that book was published in 1996, Miller has grown significantly as a writer. Together, the two books can be seen as the yin and the yang of the same story. "The Tao of Bruce Lee" is a fascinating mix of serious personal essay, new journalism, memoir, and sumptuous old-fashioned storytelling that, in many ways, is unlike anything else that I have read, though Miller himself notes the influences of Joan Didion and Tim O'Brien, among others. And this is every bit as fine a book as Mr. O'Brien's "The Things They Carried" and Ms. Didion's "Slouching Towards Bethlehem," both of which are among the best pieces of American writing of the past half-century. "The Tao of Bruce Lee: a martial arts memoir" is a brave and beautiful book that deserves a large, mainstream audience. I hope that it can somehow manage to find its proper home among discerning readers who care about non-genre literature. Miller's new book easily ranks among the best American writing of this new century.

Classic everyday poetry

I marvel that a man wrote so many poems about the pedestrian, but nonetheless important things in life. Where is our current "people's poet"? In another time and place I hope shake this man's hand. Immersing myself in this poetry is at once refreshing and induces a bit of nostalgia for a time in American culture I never lived through when old fashion decency and simple living were much more common and popular. Edgar Guest was very prolific and I have collected a few old books of his writings that I consider treasures. My young children enjoy hearing me read it to them. It is simple poetry to understand, yet evokes penetrating introspection, and for me at least, gets my mind off of the bothersome nonsensical matters of the current age that I feel powerless to do anything about. These verses remind me that what matters most is the quality of the inner character and would that all people could just take this wholesomeness with us.

I have grown up on the poems of this tiny volume... And having now moved out on my own, and starting to build my own library, began to look for this great book.... And nothing would do but the same edition that I knew so well. I was most pleased to find it here in such good shape. The description was accurate, and shipping prompt. The book is in great shape considering its age... Published in1923 and inscripted from Christmas 1925... I am most satisfied with my purchase!!

It covers the military dimensions of the emergence of Muscovy, the disastrous reign of Ivan the Terrible, and the subsequent creation of the new Romanov dynasty. It deals with Russia's emergence as a great power under Peter the Great and culminating in the defeat of Napoleon. After that triumph, the book argues, Russia's social and economic stagnation undermined its enormous military power and brought catastrophic defeat in the Crimean War. The book then covers imperial Russia's long struggle to reform its military machine, with mixed results in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I. The Russian Revolution created a new Soviet Russia, but this book shows the continuity across that divide. The Soviet Union's interwar innovations and its harrowing experience in World War II owed much to imperial Russian precedents. A superpower after the war, the Soviet Union's military might was purchased at the expense of continuing economic backwardness. Paradoxically, the very militarization intended to provide security instead destroyed the Soviet Union, leaving a new Russia behind the West economically. Just as there was a great deal of continuity after 1917, this book demonstrates how the new Russian military has inherited many of its current problems from its Soviet predecessor. The price that Russia has paid for its continued existence as a great power, therefore, is the overwhelming militarization of its society and economy, a situation it continues to struggle with.

About the Author

David R. Stone is Associate Professor of Russian history at Kansas State University. His first book Hammer and Rifle: The Militarization of the Soviet Union, 1926-1933 , was a History Book Club selection, winner of the Historical Society's inaugural Best First Book prize, and co-winner of the Shulman Prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. The author of numerous articles on Russian and Soviet military and diplomatic history, Stone is currently working on a study of Trotsky's role in the creation and development of the Red Army.

succinct and perceptive

As someone who has read considerable Russian history, including military history -- and as someone who spent his years in the Reserves and Guard training for a war with the former Soviet Union -- I can say that this book is a very good introduction to a very large subject. It's a tribute to the author that he can keep the book to 247 pages of very readable text, but still touch on all the major topics. He does not neglect the political interactions between the Russian state and its army: the push-pull between the royal courts, e.g., of Peter and Catherine the Great and the army, particularly in reforms, or the impact of dissidents as different as Pugachev or the Decembrists. It shows something of his editing skills that he can cover the sweep of all those tumultuous centuries without losing understanding or context.

He also keeps it in its own Russian context, and seeks to avoid " ... misunderstandings of Russian military history: that World War I was a war of stalemate and immobility, that World War II was a 'good war' with a clear line between the just and unjust ..." (from the introduction).

Worthwhile, either to those new to Russian military history, or to those seeking to put the wars and revolts and reformers all in a single continuum. Very worth while.

Ellie Midwood continues her thrilling The Girl From Berlin trilogy with War Criminal’s Widow. As the Nazi regime is struggling to prolong its grip in Europe, the story of Annalise, her husband Heinrich, and her lover, Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, the Chief of the Reich Main Security Office, continues. Annalise and Heinrich are German, working as counterintelligence agents for the American OSS office within the enemy organization. The Third Reich, while often viewed as a formidable organization where all members embraced one goal, is portrayed in a different light in this book. The personal misgivings and individual goals of the officers of the Third Reich lend to an understanding that even such a malevolent force is comprised of conflicted individuals, sometimes doubting its own organization’s goals. Finally, the war is over, Annalise and Heinrich’s last days in their native homeland are harrowing, while an escape is planned by the appreciative American OSS office.

Learning more about the inner workings of the Nazi regime within the triangular relationship of three main characters is certainly an engaging and intriguing process. The Girl From Berlin: War Criminal’s Widow by Ellie Midwood is a suspense-filled, page-turning historical novel with many twists and turns. Ms. Midwood is able to develop complex characters and shows that few people are all-good, or all-evil, especially when living in unusual circumstances. However, when the war ends, the consequences of previous actions remain. This is a thought-provoking novel about a very difficult time in the last century. It is not always an easy read, but it will certainly give the reader much to contemplate.

The story of "War Criminal's Widow" book 3 in the series The Girl from Berlin, highlights the skill of the author Ellie Midwood. Aspects of the series are sensitive, given they deal with war crimes. The dependence triangle of Annalise, her husband Heinrich, and Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, the Chief of the Reich Main Security Office, creates a compelling and complex personal story of flawed individuals, told against a fascinating and spine-chilling background of the rise and fall of The Third Reich.

This final book in the series is set during the demise of The Third Reich and the aftermath. As Germany falls to the allies there is a search for justice and for an atonement from war criminals. Many escape from that justice. Excuses are made for the criminal actions of those engaged war crimes by those who stand by them at the end.

This is a page-turning, gripping account of what people in these types of situations are: neither all devil, just as the winners in war aren’t pure saint. Neither of the the opposing men, husband, and lover of Annalise are shown as a hero. That’s how life is. This story's merit is that it was never about showing a perfect world, a perfect love, in shows the truth of human nature and how we can be corrupted by love ann hatred. This is great story telling.

This novel left me thinking, not of the retribution still owed to Ernst, but of his son. Ernst junior. He is a child of a Jew and of one who contributed to the destruction of many Jews. What will the world hold for his future? Will he grow up obsessed by bigotry and hatred as his father did, love unwisely as does his mother, or is there a future that includes humanitarian attitudes ahead for him?

The concept for this series was brilliant, and the writing brought it to life. You cannot read this story without feeling emotion and being left affected by the story. A deserved five stars.

In this, the third book of the Girl From Berlin Series, Annalise finds herself in the final days of the second world war. Torn between her first love, husband Heinrich, and true love, lover Ernst, she has a front row seat as the Third Reich collapses. Her counter intelligence activities should have bought her safety from the forces closing in on Berlin, but that doesn’t keep her from despair when the city and all those she loves are in jeopardy.

I don’t envy the position Annalise finds herself in. To be balanced between the men she loves while watching what is left of her world fall apart, is heartbreaking. I touched on a point in an earlier review how not black and white the world is. The author has once again and more definitively shown how a war machine like the Nazis is made up of individuals that are simply trying to survive. No excuses are made for the horrors inflicted on the world, yet it is brought home clearly how easily good people can do bad things even in the name of doing good. The attention to detail is once again the finest point of the story. The reader feels what it was like to be trapped in a Berlin about to collapse at the end of a long war. The sacrifice of doing the right thing when it would be so easy to turn a blind eye was evocatively made clear.

I will admit the love story did not turn out the way I thought it should, but then that is why I am reading and Ellie Midwood is writing. It is a beautiful story full of nuance. The tale of the girl from Berlin and all the men who loved her is an instant classic.

Strap on your seatbelt! This is top notch writing!

I loved the first two books in this series and so I was hellbent on reading book three. My expectations were met and surpassed in every way. This is top notch story telling by a top notch author.

Before you begin reading strap on your seat belt. The story took me from nail biting tension in the first scene to moments of happiness and joy later into the story, and then, only halfway through the book, I was plunged into despair. Ms. Midwood had me in the palm of her hand as she toyed with my emotions and my heart rate was going up and down like a yo-yo. I was certain there would have to be a sad ending, because logically, how else could it end? Well, I was dead wrong, and glad of it. I never saw that ending coming. I'm still smiling at the huge twist.

Favorite character - Ernst Kaltenbrunner, and that's saying a lot, because I fell in love with Heinrich in book one.

Favorite scene - Ernst and Heinrich in the basement during the bombings getting drunk. What a scene! Close second is breakfast with Otto discussing sleeping arrangements. I won't say more and give away spoilers.

My only regret is to see this series come to an end...but wait! There another series about Ernst! OMG!

Interesting but wordy

The book touches on some advanced topics in spirituality. These of course have no basis of confirmation in today's science but nonetheless have been experiences of some folks. The author does a great job of balancing the pragmatic with the seemingly fictional sublime. The writing did seem a bit wordy but is worth a read by a spiritual aspirant.

From start of finish, it was full of great tips and recommendations

I am thrilled with Joanna Silber's book Wedding Photography Start to Finish. The opening paragraph was so funny I had to get up and reread it to my husband. She carries this lighthearted tone throughout the book, making it pleasant and fun to read while hammering out lengthy shot lists and editing software recommendations.

It really feels as though the author is on the side of the reader, divulging personal anecdotes and giving recommendations from her own experiences, while at the same time providing clear and detailed definitions, technical explanations and background information. It is all in there, from how to shoot a wedding in the rain, to choosing methods of archiving your projects.

I like the layout of the book. It is broken up into clever sections of: The proposal, The Wedding, The Honeymoon and The Marriage. Each packed with how-to information specific to wedding videography as well as general information on how to run a successful business through its various phases. If you are like me, who read it start to finish, the pages just kept flipping. However, finding specific subject matter is also easy, with a thorough table of contents and index.

The tips and notes sections are great. Many of them are fantastic, even if you are not a wedding photographer. They are just great life advise. The author really does an excellent job of addressing both novices and established professionals. Because the work is so comprehensive, there is something for everyone.

My one complaint about the writing of this book was the frequency of the phrase, "That being said..." I found myself reading a paragraph only to wait for the hitch, which consisently would come shortly thereafter. However, I suppose such is life these days, full of angles from which to view it. That being said, I congratulate the author on completing this magnificently thorough and heartfelt piece of work.

Much needed information

Wedding Videography from Start to Finish gave me great insight on what to expect from my first wedding shoot. I have done sports videography and have taken on numerous other projects but nothing as intimate as a wedding. It was especially good for me to have this book because of the use of Adobe Premiere Pro as the video editing application which I am using.

More coming-of-age fiction with very little romance

I rarely ever give one stars because I'm pretty careful about what I select to read. But the blurb does not accurately depict the nature of the story, and the story is riddled with various issues, two specifically that deal with the content. A more thorough review with details is posted on my blog. This is a condensed version.

This started out as an engaging story that had a lot of potential; I was intrigued by Adaley and Ryle’s opening story and was pulled in right from the start. But unfortunately as the chapters progressed my star rating continued to go down. Issue after issue crept up. And there really needs to be a reader warning with this story. There's no indication of dark themes and there really should be because ****spoiler alert*** this book does NOT have an HEA (major character death) and does not depict an exclusive relationship.

Even if those two major items aren't deal breakers for you, there's plenty of other issues. The narration seems to suffer an identity crisis, switching back and forth from first person POV (Adaley) to third person to describe Ryle. Why Ryle’s “sections” aren’t in first person from his perspective, I could never figure out. The third person narration in those parts made me feel disconnected to Ryle, were sometimes just creepy the way it described things—like a stalker observing the action; and had numerous grammatical errors with tense. One sentence was present, the next past.

I could never quite identify if this story was meant to be young adult or new adult. While it frequently addressed mature themes and the characters were over 18, any romantic encounters were either watered down or “fade away” scenes. It probably would have been better to have embraced the “new adult” audience who have more life experience as I personally wouldn’t want any “young adults” coming away with some of the messages in this story.

As far as genre goes, this is probably more of a coming-of-age story with some romance mixed in than it is a full-fledged romance. The message the story seems to convey is that there’s no triumph in the face of adversity, but dreams are still supposed to be obtainable. How, after what happens with the characters, I have no clue.

Other problems that plagued the reading were as follows:

There were shadows of continuity errors in various places, and I could never get a feel for the age/year of some of the characters. Adaley talks of how she “transferred” but it’s established as Fall and the start of her freshman year. Adaley arrives as the “new girl” with everyone else seemingly already knowing each other and their way around campus as if they’ve been there already so it felt like everyone else had to be at least sophomores, though I’m not sure they were supposed to be.

Both Adaley and Ryle come off preachy at times. Their combined attitudes (somewhat narrow minded views) of sexuality and substance abuse didn’t endear me to their characters. The word “butch” is thrown around far too much, mostly at places that seemed out of context on top of everything else.

Multiple times in the story a girl’s virginity is referred to as a “gift” to give a man. That didn’t exactly sit well with my feminist side.

Enjoyment of this book will depend a lot on what you are looking for as well as your definitions of a romance. Readers requiring an exclusive relationship and the characters alive at the end will want to pass on this one.

A book will the all emotions!

This is the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it. It was a cute, sweet read. I laughed, I cried, I felt joy and I felt sorrow.

Adaley was always the good girl so when she goes off to college, she was determined to be a little wild, a little reckless. While reading, I could see a little of myself in Adaley at that age. It was a little reminiscent.

Ryle was so mysterious to me. I was constantly asking myself why is he doing this and while is he acting this way. It kept me want to know more and more about him. I really loved the secondary characters, Tank and Zoe. Those two were hilarious and I hope to read more about them in the future.

Gah!!! The ending!!! It wasn't the ending I was hoping for but I can't fault the book for that. Even after having finished the book, I am still thinking about it so mission accomplished! The book had such a fantastic message of following your dream and never give up.

I really enjoyed the storyline. I kept wanting to know more about all the characters and it was entertaining. It switched character POV through the story but sometimes got confusing with the transitions, or lack there of, between characters. I would put this book in between YA and NA. There wasn't anything to heavy as far as sex goes. I did find some of the dialogue to be a little immature, but these are also 18-19 year olds so it kind of fits. If you are looking for a cute and funny read with a good message I would recommend this book.

This book was just not for me. Adaley is probably the most annoying character I have read in awhile. I found her more annoying that most characters in the new adult genre. Everything about her was so cliche it was hard to read. And Ryle was pretty unlikable. He had that whole mysterious thing going on, but not in a way that made me want to know more about him. I had to give up on the book at 25%. I just couldn't take it. I hate giving up on a book.
Now, all of that being said, others might love this book and not find Adaley annoying-thats just my personal feelings. There is nothing wrong with the actual writing of the book/plot/etc so my dislikes are all personal and might not bother you at all.
