A must read, be enlightened!

I was amazed at the detailed account of the author. I had no idea the Homosexuals were treated like this until I read this book. It is very sad, and even though you want to scream at the top of your lungs in anger at these atrocities, the lessons in the book are many. For instance, God does shine his light down on men who are attracted to the same sex. The story of the priest who also wore the pink triangle was amazing. He was beaten, tied up, tortured, and still forced to stand up or be beaten more. As the Nazi SS gaurd was ready to strike him again, a narrow beam of sunlight peeked from behind the clouds and only shone upon the priest's face while He murmured prayers from his lips, crying tears like a river. But how that light from God shone only upon His face as all those men with the pink triangles stood shoulder to shoulder was a miracle. Even the author says it was amazing and something that all those men can never forget. The SS gaurd seen it and slowly put his hand down. The preist was greatly comforted and knew he was to be with the Lord that day. He died shortly after that and was relieved of this hell in the camp.

I highly recommend the book to anyone seeking a better understanding into to persecution of Gays in the Holocaust. The other lesson I have learned is that you come to a realization that God created men who have same sex attractions. Not even the Nazis could force these men to have sexual feelings for women. It was simply unnatural for them. Another thing I learned from this book is that all those in charge in the camps were not denying themselves relations with some of the male prisoners with the pink triangle. Those who became the sex slaves of thier superiors were fed more and looked healthier. But most of them were not so fortunate. They all suffered. This was an eye-opener! Read it.

Almost everyone has heard of the Nazi"Holocaust"...Usually this term is associated with the extermination campaign directed against the jews...indeed,for some today "Holocaust" and the extermination of jews by the nazis during WW2 are synonomous..However the nazis were not only determined to wipe out jews...Gypsies,the mentally ill,jehovah's witnesses,the slavs,the poles,communists,even blacks figured into the nazi death plan,and all of these groups have had some sort of recognition given to them on account of the suffering they endured under the nazis...Homosexuals on the other hand,although targets of this same nazi campaign of extermination,have had little or no publicity given to the hardships they suffered under this brutal regieme..Forced to wear a pink triangle when captured and confined in concentration camps,Homosexuals suffered doubly under the nazi program;on the one hand they,like jews and others,were viewed as being undesirable and worthy only of extermination,but unlike jews and the other groups listed earlier,homosexuals also carried the stigma of being assigned criminal status on account of thier sexual orientation,a blot that was not rectified after the nazis were defeated in 1945,and the concentration camps were liberated...
This book gives an overview of the situation and tells the in-depth story of one Austrian homosexual who survived six years in the nazi concentration camps...It is at once both a harrowing and yet elequent document,revealing a chapter in the brutal history of Hitler's Germany that has otherwise not been told previously.

Ok, I realize this is very old, outdated, and Koontz' first major publication. It was a quick and easy read, and very predictable yet still enjoyable enough. I am currently on a mission to read all of Koontz' works. I just read Demon Seed,and now Shattered. I am reading them all in order. Although I should have saved Demon Seed for when it was updated. Which is why I am leaving Winter Moon and Icebound for their revised dates and moving on to Night Chills next.

Solid, but Very Dated Thriller

I remember reading "Shattered" ages ago, and really enjoying it. Seeing as how it clocks in at just over 200 pages, I recently picked it up again to pass the time on a lazy Sunday. The good news is that the base story of "Shattered" is still a gripping thriller. A man begins a cross-country drive from Philadelphia to San Francisco in order to make a fresh start in a new job with his new wife. Tagging along for the ride is the man's new "younger brother" through marriage. It's a chance for the two men to bond, get to know each other and prepare themselves for the momentus changes coming their way. Unfortunately, they've nabbed the attention of homicidal maniac who plans to waylay and murder them somewhere along their long journey.
It's a fun story, and as stated it's just barely over 200 pages, meaning you could retire the entire thing in half a day, or spread it out over two lunch hours. The story is reminicent of the films "Duel" and "Joy Ride". There is lots of action, and Koontz does a great job of ratcheting up the suspense as the story unfolds.
The only drawback to "Shattered", which first hit bookshelves in 1973, is that it is terribly dated. Quite a bit of the novel deals with the protagonist running into prejudice against "hippies". References to Vietnam and Charles Whitman's sniper shootings, as well as Charlie Manson and Richard Speck as recent events also tie the novel to a certain time in American history, which is now three decades past. The police in the story discuss the "freaks" tearing apart the moral fabric of the country seems pretty antiquated now as well.
I still recommend this novel, but would love to see Koontz update this story as he has done with "Twilight Eyes".

Too many loose ends

First of all, if you want a book you can read fast this is your book. It's a very short novel, one of Koont's first writings (which you can immediately tell by repeated references to the looks of the main characters, and the concept people, specially those in law enforcement, have of them). I did like the fast read and to tell the truth, I was glad to be able to read the novel after learning about it a few years ago, because I found the synopsis rather interesting.
The problem with this book however is that it leaves many loose ends and as fast as it goes it really avoids a deeper approach to the story. Many readers are reminded of Duel, I was also remimded of the movie Joyride, but to tell the truth we never get a real nailbiting, mind shredding chase on the highway itself, except when the van catches up with our heros in a deserted road. The book is broken down in six parts, one for each of six days (monday, tuesday...), but you start reading that they get a glimpse of the van on tuesday morning, they get scared about it, lose it, and on the next page it's already tuesday night.
Tension is better built on the second part of the book, specially towards the end but then the ending is too abrupt. As in Whispers this book has no epilogue, but you start feeling shoved to the exit.
One of the things I didn't like, and which I realized a little while after finishing the book, was the waste of time with the cop and the forensics technician. I remember a scene in the book when the cop is sitting at a restaurant (or a cafe, something along those lines) and the technician approches him all of a sudden and starts inquiring about the case. I had this image of the worried cop and the Gil Grissom-like tech coming up with a mindblowing way of how to catch the maniac, which would lead to a great climax, but then all of a sudden we never hear from them again. They are completely forgotten, so I don't really know why they were given the importance they were given in the first place.
Not the best Koontz I've read but it keeps you entertained for a while. If instead you wanna try a more interesting short novel by Koontz I would recommend The Voice of the Night.
