About the Author

John F. Hughes is a Professor of Computer Science at Brown University. His primary research is in computer graphics, particularly those aspects of graphics involving substantial mathematics.

 

Andries van Dam is the Thomas J. Watson, Jr. University Professor of Technology and Education, and Professor of Computer Science at Brown University. Andy’s research includes work on computer graphics, hypermedia systems, post-WIMP user interfaces, including immersive virtual reality and pen- and touch-computing, and educational software.

 

Morgan McGuire is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Williams College. He's contributed as an industry consultant to products including the Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Titan Quest video game series, the E Ink display used in the Amazon Kindle, and NVIDIA GPUs.

 

David F. Sklar is a visualization engineer at Vizify.com, working on algorithms for presenting animated infographics on computing devices across a wide range of form factors.

 

James D. Foley is a professor and holds the Fleming Chair in the College of Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology. The best reference on how graphics work in today's computers that I have found

I'm a technical writer and published author who has spent the last couple of years working to get up to speed on the latest in computer hardware. One area that I've really struggled with has been 3D graphics, GPUs and related areas of technology. It's easy to find material explaining what a GPU is or the steps in a 3D graphics pipeline; almost impossible to find anything that will actually take you through the steps of understanding what these things are, why they matter, and how they are used.

This is the only book/ebook/website/anything I've found that even comes close to hitting the mark. I've read around 40% of it so far, and even though it's oriented more towards those who will actually do computer graphics programming, the underpinnings are so well laid out that it has greatly enhanced my understanding even at the hardware level. I can only imagine it is all the more useful for those approaching it from the software angle, even if the exact APIs and frameworks used are a bit different.

Furthermore, the writing is understandable. I personally orient my own writing towards ensuring the reader can comprehend what I'm saying, and I recognize the same focus here. The authors anticipate areas of confusion and address them ahead of time, and everything is cross-referenced in just the right places. Even the way the code snippets are laid out is clever, with a form of "nesting" used to emphasize the parts being discussed.

The math does get a bit dense at times. And I think the book would benefit from some editing to cut down on the very long paragraphs, which make digesting the concepts a little more difficult than they would be otherwise. But these are minor issues.

I also like the Kindle version being properly formatted like a real book so I don't have to use a magnifying glass on fuzzy tables and so forth.

Overall, a very fine piece of content for anyone who wants to learn how computer graphics work.

Excellent Book for Computer Graphics

This book is the best source to learn the concepts of Computer Graphics. The third edition has been updated with almost all recent developments in Computer Graphics research. It starts from very basic ones and takes one seamlessly to advanced topics. The only problem is that codes are given in WPF. But there are other excellent books which supplement this book through OpenGL and WebGL programming - OpenGL SuperBible: Comprehensive Tutorial and Reference (6th Edition), OpenGL Programming Guide: The Official Guide to Learning OpenGL, Version 4.3 (8th Edition), and WebGL Programming Guide: Interactive 3D Graphics Programming with WebGL (OpenGL).

I am teaching my Computer Graphics course using this excellent textbook. A must read for Computer Graphics researchers, students, and professionals.

Computer Graphics is indeed a must for anyone being involved in the design and implementation of CG algorithm. This is undisputable.

Anyway I was disappointed by the third edition, in big part for the quasi-disappearance of 2D topics. I will continue to recommend the 2nd edition, way better in my opinion, and still up-to-date on many subjects.

Same old

Did I even read the same book as all these people? I wouldn't say it was terrible as I have read worse books but I certainly wouldn't say it was worth the five stars that many have given. The story line is so old. The girl has been in love with her best friend forever, he goes away for a while, she gets lonely and hooks up with someone else and naked pictures or some sordid video is released blah blah blah.
I honestly don't get how some characters are written. I did not like the girl, I can't even remember her name, she is that unforgettable. I like that she managed to get stronger after the bullying, but I still didn't like her. The only redeeming quality of this book was Daltrey. I did like him

Young Adult read

While written nicely this story dragged on endlessly. It should be marketed as Yound Adult. The hero and heroine are 19 and the writer has done an excellent job keeping their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors at that cusp of adulthood. I found it unsatisfying that the adults in the story are protagonists who have "done wrong" to the lead couple, who again are immature and rely on others to make life decisions for them. I would not be interested in reading a follow-up to this story.

Low-angst, sweet and emotional

Daltrey and Daisy have been best friends since they were five, and have both harbored feelings for each other for years. After not speaking for a year (in which Daltrey gets a recording contract and major fame), they see each other again, and this is when the majority of the story takes place.

This is a romance, but it's also a story about bullying. Daisy went through a lot of ugly stuff while Daltrey was becoming famous. She didn't tell Daltrey about what was happening, not wanting to ruin his chances at success. It was easy to sympathize with Daisy, and she really got a lot stronger throughout the story.

This was a pretty low-angst read. Both Daltrey and Daisy were able to talk things out for the most part like adults. It was other people believing they had the best interests of Daltrey/Daisy that caused the problems. Daltrey managed to be a rock star without being a manwhore, which I liked. Daltrey's dad was a piece of work, him I wanted to punch.

Not My Favorite, But Still Good

For anyone who (also) didn't read the second book, this is a prologue of sorts to the whole series, as the primary story occurs three-ish years prior to Beauty and the Beast. I guess I'm still a little confused as to that, but I like the story enough to ignore it.

First, this wasn't what I expected, but I'm glad. I ways support gender-bending traditional fairy tales, and Gabrielle is a fun lead, a young woman who is strong when we meet her and only grows stronger. Even though she doesn't like people, she still manages to show them compassion and empathy, and she's hard-working and down-to-Earth. She's sensible, likeable, and well-written. Gabrielle joins the line of kicka$$ heroines from books 1, 4, and 5. (I have not read 2 or 3, so I won't comment on their female leads.)

Puss is the character that I would consider the deuteragonist (which may be good or bad, considering.) He's just as fun to read as Gabrielle, and he provides a strong foil to her character. They highlight each other well, and he's the best cat I've ever read about. Like another reader, I hope to read about him meeting Elle and Severin.

Steffen's presence was weak in the novel. Now, since this was my first encounter with him, perhaps he had more character development in 2. Here though, in terms of presence and importance, Steffen was the fairy tale princess to Gabrielle's hero. He popped up when the plot called for it, but he never moved past slightly arrogant, hot-and-cold Crown Prince. Gabrielle and Puss dominated this book, and Steffen felt more like a flat side character than the love interest. I liked the way the proposal scene went at the end, but the epilogue confused me. Again, maybe reading the second book would really have helped, but it was like, "what do you mean you weren't affectionate, Steffen?"

So while I liked the heroine and her magic cat, this book read as more of an adventure than a romance, probably mostly because Steffen was just never really around. I'd be fine with that, but I think K. M. Shea was still going for a strong romance, not just an adventure.

My favorite female character in the series...and the most idiotic romantic interest

I've read all the books in the series but the The Wild Swans, and while I really enjoyed the others, I just ended this book with a bitter taste in my mouth. The characters of Gabrielle (her romantic leanings aside, though I admire her heart) and Puss were possibly my favorite in the series, but they were ruined by that debbie downer of a prince, Steffan.

One of the things I particularly liked about the previous books was how the main characters looked past the exterior (even though it's a little tiring that each and every one of them except Belle is "exotic" and "the most beautiful/handsome woman/man"), emphasizing how love is not just a temporary feeling, and something that needs to be constantly worked on. While that was emphasized in this book through dialogue, it wasn't really shown.

For one, the main characters, with limited interaction, fall in love over the space of what, seven action packed days? Secondly, love at first sight nor not, Steffan is an idiot. Although some reviewers complained of his not being such a central part of the book as other romanic interests in the series have been, I was actually glad of this - I thought he was insufferable and immature. I appreciate the fact that the author tried to give him some more human failings than the previous romantic interests, but with the particular failings she gave him, I did not see the connection between him and Gabi that the author kept telling us was there. I kept hoping Gabi would realize what an idiot the prince was and that Puss would turn out to be a man (but not a noble or mage, please!) under a spell, since they actually had a real relationship, and a fun one at that.

I also noticed some problems with stringing the tales together smoothly, particularly with Gabi running off to the ogre the second time right after the conversation with Steffan, and then the very quick and easy solution to the ogre.

So, while I truly enjoyed the characters of Gabi and Puss, the idiocy of Steffan and some tale-stringing problems made me finish this book dissatisfied.

Puss in Boots was one of those classic bedtime stories that everybody grew up with in childhood, and, like any fairy tale, there’s a certain challenge in making it stand out from its original counterpart. I’m starting to believe that Ms. Shea could nail it with her eyes closed and a hand tied behind her back. Her writing style is engaging, witty, and seamlessly draws the reader right into the story. The overarching plot of the evil takeover is thoroughly expanded upon in this book and we even get a peek into what happened to Enchanter Everest (whom I’ve determined at this point I don’t wholly trust).
Furthermore, her world building is fascinating and beautiful. I’m always thrilled when I see the fairy tales within fairy tales that pop up in her books. In addition to Puss in Boots and The Six Swans, we have allusions to Hansel and Gretel, The Golden Goose (would that make Steffen the princess who never laughed?), Rumpelstiltskin, and I’m pretty sure there’s even a reference to The Bremen Town Musicians in there! She always manages to throw in as many references as possible, and then some, and I absolutely love it!
Gabi is a delightful main character. I loved the banter between her and “Puss”. Coming from a small town, I can really relate to her wanting to get out, see the world, and have adventures. I was a little disappointed with how much she reminded me of Gemma, but that can be ignored if one focuses a little more on the plot and a little less on the characters themselves.
