Current research spans both of the School’s programmes and includes work with colleagues in Dundee and Bristol on developing an intervention for weight loss part partum and understanding the reasons for suboptimal uptake of folic acid. A personal programme of work is concerned with the sociology of recovery and involves research into young adult cancer patients’ concerns about future fertility (with colleagues from Aberdeen), reintegration after stroke, and the long-term outcomes for women who have experienced post partum psychosis (with colleagues at St.Andrews).

Her research career has covered a wide variety of topics located at the intersection of the clinical and the social - e.g. HIV/AIDS; reproductive health and fertility; psychosocial health; and obesity. Rose’s theoretical interests centre around the links between identity and agency, and implications for health promotion and clinical practice. Rose has a particular interest in rigour in qualitative research and has published widely on this topic in a range of academic journals. Reflecting her conviction that qualitative research is a craft skill, Rose has developed an innovative series of ‘hands-on’ qualitative methods workshops. She has been invited to present these workshops throughout the UK, in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, France, the US and Canada. She co-edited Developing Focus Group Research: Politics, Theory and Practice (Sage, 1999). Her most recent books - Introducing Qualitative Research: A Student Guide to the Craft of Doing Qualitative Research (Sage, 2014) and Doing Focus Groups (Sage, 2008) - bring together and share the expertise she has developed through running workshops for a variety of audiences over the past 15 years.

According to Potter (coauthor of Nation of Rebels), the cost of modernity's dismantling of traditional frameworks of truth and meaning has forced meaning and authenticity to become individual searches that are private and consumercentric. We live, Potter argues, in a world dominated by the prepackaged and the artificial, the fraudulent and the fake. Growing out of this increasingly bleak cultural landscape is a movement centered on the notion of authenticity: the honest, the natural, the real. That’s all fine and good, Potter says, except for one thing: we don’t have a clue what we mean by authenticity, and even if we did, we wouldn’t know how to find it. That is, the quest for authenticity is a hoax—there is no such thing. Authenticity is an exclusionist notion, defined, by what it isn’t, not by what it is, and, for the most part, so-called authentic lifestyles are just as artificial and contrived as the rest of modern culture. It’s a fascinating approach to a fascinating subject, and Potter bolsters his argument with examples drawn from pop culture, history, and other sources. "Culture? That is something we do for tourists."

The above quote is from this book's seventh chapter. Not only are we all multiculturalists now, but the idea of being 'authentic' is simply part of our every day vocabulary. Bestsellers like The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment, Dilbert and The Office lampoon the inauthentic desk job, and a robust consumer market of 'authentic' everything (from jeans to organic produce) grows by the year.

So, why challenge it? Andrew Potter gives us several good reasons. First, he suggests that seeking for authenticity is as self-defeating as it is phony. It is self-defeating because when one quests for the authentic, one tends to get lost in the search (which is the opposite of focusing on any 'true self'). It is phony because, all too often, seeking the authentic - buying organic food, appreciating different cultural artifacts, etc - is every bit as much about appearing to be authentic to others as it is achieving authenticity for the self. The first several chapters (minus the first, which explores the emergence of authenticity as an ideal, explore these themes).

Next we come to some chapters that question the very distinction between authentic and inauthentic, on epistemic and ontological grounds. Ontologically, it is simply arbitrary to call x natural and y authentic when, in reality, they may be both made from the same stuff. What makes, say, an original painting authentic and a reproduction inauthentic? Now we get to the shaky epistemology. The original painting is real, says Potter, not because of anything about the painting, but EVERYTHING about our expectations of the painting. Several studies reviewed by Potter, for instance, show that one's appraisal of a thing is often wholly dependent on the background story it is presented with. (Tell everyone a wine is one of a kind, and the bottle of Yellow Tail just tastes better.)

In this sense, Potter suggests that authenticity is somewhat of a sham game. If the search for authenticity was REALLY about authenticity, after all, it would not matter for our enjoyment whether the painting is an original or a reproduction, or the wine is rare and old or common and new. Any search for authenticity that seeks eclecticism, uniqueness, non-conformity, for its own sake isn't a search for authenticity at all, but a drive to feel different, even if it means FORCING oneself to be what one isn't. Ironic, huh?

My favorite chapters are six (Vote for Me, I'm Authentic) and seven (Culture is for Tourists). In chapter six, Potter is skeptical about whether, despite the lip service, we really desire authenticity in politics. After all, while we like to talk about our desire for straight talk, we still devour the sound bites (especially the gaffes). We could say the media is responsible for this, but Potter reminds us that the only reason the media collects sound bites is because we watch 'em. Chapter seven points out the irony that while progressives used to be cosmopolitan, the age of globalization - a cosmopolitan's dream - has now turned many of them into communitarians. Similar to arguments made in Fish's article "Boutique Multiculturalism" (The Trouble with Principle, Potter makes the point that multiculturalism has somewhat become a caricature of itself: when culture is, as he puts it, treated as a museum piece rather than a way of life that one does rather than watches, it becomes a thin replica of itself. Once again, the quest for authenticity is more about appearances than realities.

Put simply, this is an interesting piece of contrarian writing. I am inclined to agree with most of it and despite minor flaws (I think his interpretation of Rousseau in chapter 1 is a bit off), would recommend it to anyone who wishes to see a dominant cultural assumption challenged a bit.

Full of stuff, but missing stuff

The Bad: Several of Potter's personal positions go unexamined throughout the writing. The writing itself often feels undirected (and unrelated to the core thesis) from chapter to chapter. And Potter often spends so much time explaining previous findings and other arguments that his actual point gets lost.

The Good: There's a huge amount of stuff in here linking a wide range of philosophers to particular societal behavioral patterns that have played out over the years. I suspect that this book would be more valuable for people than most 100-level philosophy college courses. Really, I loved how much large portions of this book shifted my perspectives so that I could think about things in different ways.

The Ugly: Potter seems to run the entire book without tapping either existentialism or absurdism, which is a bit of a problem as they're directly concerned with answering to what is real about humanity, starting with the basic premise that Existence Precedes Essence (a.k.a. You are as you do, not as you think) and, as Sartre wrote "Hell is other people" not because they don't get the real you, but because maybe they do. Also, Erich Fromm might have been mentioned in passing for his work in Escape From Freedom, but not nearly enough to appropriately reflect his body of work on this topic.

Authenticity Hoax Is Provocative and Lucid Yet Heavily Flawed

The Authenticity Hoax is worthy buying for the first 60 pages alone, a concise, exhilarating explanation of the birth of modernity: industrialization, individualism, consumerism and how these elements result in alienation. Some people, Potter point, try to reject modernity and find a romantic and nostalgic solution: reject the modern world and search for authenticity. He points to Rousseau whose works have been misinterpreted to this end.

The problem with Potter's argument is that he lumps all critics of modernity under the same label: "declinists." These are in Potter's mind crackpots. But fringe extremists should not be lumped with political leaders, such as Al Gore and others, under the declinist banner so that Potter can propel his conservative polemic.

I find this gross over simplification and faulty comparison both illogical and insidious propaganda lacking the intellectual rigor for serious debate. And I find it ironic that this kind of intellectual dishonesty (from a writer who knows better) is behind a book that purports to be interested in uncovering a "hoax."

My other criticism is that Potter has not clearly defined "authenticity." He uses the word in so many ways that it almost becomes meaningless; worse, a lot of the chapters have no logical connection to the other as the "authenticity" as a reaction to modernity has no relation to the "authenticity" between art and creativity as discussed in Chapter 3.

As a primer for the birth of modernity, this book is worth getting. But as a polemic that lumps all critics of modernity as charlatans and crackpots, this book fails. A far superior book on the subject of the quest of false authenticity (not even mentioned in Potter's polemic) is David Brooks' satirical Bobos in Paradise.

Final Thoughts:

This is one of the few book's I've recommended in spite of its heavy flaws. This just goes to show that a book that fails as a whole may be worthy because of its parts many of which are convincing as ideas on their own. Probably this book would work better as a collection of separate essays.

Three Alpha Males Find Love with Three Sweet Women (for all three books)

I wasn't aware of Lucy Monroe's "3 Brides for 3 bad Boys" books when they first came out. I ordered them for my Kindle and read them in order, one after the other. Each one could be a stand alone book, as she gives enough information at the beginning of each book. However, I am so glad I read all three in order. Rand, Carter and Colton had the same jerk for a father but different mothers. Their ways of thinking were influenced by their father...none of them wanted to be anything like him. The romances in these books are fun, sweet, sexy and quirky. I like these brothers and the women they end up with.

Oh my gosh! I loved this book from the first page...so much raw pain, passion and strong emotions that overcome a determined man's heart! Rand and Phoebe are beautiful in their love and their scorching lovemaking ain't bad either! This is going to be a totally exciting series!!

About the Author

Chris Dickinson

Chris Dickinson grew up in England with a strong passion for science, mathematics, and video games. He received his master's degree in physics with electronics from the University of Leeds in 2005, and immediately traveled to California to work on scientific research in the heart of Silicon Valley. Finding that career path unsuitable, he began working in the software industry. Over the last decade, he has made a career in software development, becoming a senior software developer. Chris has primarily worked in software automation and internal test tool development, but his passion for video games never fully faded. In 2010, he took the path of discovering the secrets of game development and 3D graphics by completing a second degree―a bachelor's degree in game and simulation programming. He authored a tutorial book on game physics (Learning Game Physics with Bullet Physics and OpenGL by Packt Publishing). He continues to work in software development, creating independent game projects in his spare time with tools such as Unity 3D.

I have been working with Unity for many years and a common problem we always have sooner or later is optimization. There are many tutorials, posts and articles out there with valuable information on how to optimize your Unity app, but they are not complete and difficult to collect.

Chris in this Unity 5 Game Optimization has done a fantastic job putting into one book all the best techniques and suggestions to make your Unity game a success, considering all the different aspects your game can be optimized.

A must have for intermediate-advanced unity developers.

Excellent book on optimization.

Pros:
* Covers all areas of optimization. Scripting, Batching, Art and Sound assets, Physics, Graphics and memory management.
* Always careful to show how to test if optimizations worth doing.
* Highlights differences between mobile and desktop optimizations.
* Includes chapter on using the Profiler that is now free in Unity 5 Personal.

Cons:
* Some topics covered more than once although this is probably more noticeable as I read book cover to cover rather than just cherry picking chapters.
* A few sections quite wordy and felt they could be shorter.

Whilst I don't yet have a project ready to use most of the topics covered in this book I will definitely be coining back to it again when I do.

Highly recommended tips for the intermediate Unity programmer.

Very, very well written and thorough. The author is clearly a member of the Unity community, attends the conferences, reads the forums & Stack Overflow, and is a power user. I finished the book in two days and took copious notes. This book is intended for an intermediate Unity programmer who wants to learn about a multitude of optimization techniques. Instead of regurgitating the manual, the author does a great job of pulling together information from disparate sources and presenting it in an extremely clear and friendly manner. One of the best Unity books out there.

One of the 10 best American cookbooks of this century.

When Ozarks native and home economist Meta Given published her first Modern Encyclopedia of Cooking in the 1940s, it was an immediate hit. It went through numerous revisions and reprintings in the 1950s and '60s, selling hundreds of thousands of copies -- astonishing figures for a cookbook published as a two-volume set of 1,500 pages. I grew up with this cookbook -- my parents still have their set -- and bought my own (1955 edition) on e Bay. This is not fad or diet cooking or nouvelle cuisine. This is a cookbook from a lady who spent her life cooking and knew what worked, from scrambled eggs (the secret: very low heat and long cooking time; they are even better with some Accent) to Lobster Thermidor. If anyone knows what became of her, if she is still with us, please let me know. -- David Hall
From the November 8, 1990, Los Angeles Times: "Some of the best cookbooks are out of print, replaced by a constant surge of new recipe collections. One old-timer that deserves longer life is "Meta Given 's Modern Encyclopedia of Cooking" (J.G. Ferguson Publishing Co.), a two-volume set first published in 1947 and revised in 1959. I picked up Vol. 1 in the Goodwill years ago and found it so valuable that I was thrilled when, months later, I came across Vol. 2. The recipes are amazingly thorough, detailing techniques that most cookbook authors would never think to describe. I appreciated this when called upon to make an angel food cake for a birthday celebration. Following Given's instructions to the letter, I beat the egg whites by hand with an old-fashioned flat wire whip, sifted the dry ingredients seven times and counted the strokes used to fold in the egg whites. The result was a magnificent cake -- tender, beautifully textured and delicately flavored with almond."

Meta Givens Modern Encyclopedia of Cooking

Like the reviewer from Gulf Shores, Ala.., I couldn't even boil water when I married. I purchased this cook book in about 1952 and learned how to cook from it. It was my cooking bible. My copy has been through too many moves to count, the hard cover is gone and some of the pages from the front and back. But it is still used. The pumpkin pie recipe that calls for orange juice is a family favorite. We don't wait for holidays to make it. I used this book to teach my children the proper way to set a table. I'v used the menues. I used it to find out how to dress out ducks that my husband brought home from hunting. I like the way the recipes are grouped together in sections. If you want to bake cookies, all recipes are together. I learned all of the mysteries of cooking terms. We subsitute healthier choices for some of the ingredients. For a new comer to cooking or shopping for food, the hints on what to look for are invaluable. Not everyone takes Home Ec in school or is even interested in it, anymore. Meta Givens taught Home Ec. at the Univercity of Chicago. With more people wanting to buy healthy, it is wonderful. Not everyone wants " frozen" home cooked food. I have four grown children who are squabbling over who get's it when I die! I have tried to find at least one more copy of this cook book. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the publisher would re-print this cook book!

Not as described from seller

I ordered a 2-volume set which was described as being in "used good" condition. I received only one of the two volumes (volume 2) which was far from "used good" it was not even in "used acceptable" condition. Several signatures have fallen out of the binding. The cover is torn on the spine and ripped through the cover and binding material. Now I have to go through the hassle of returning the item, getting a refund (since this was not directly from Amazon, but from an "approved" seller) and wait for a refund, then try to find this nostalgic book (the one my mother used to cook from) from another used book source. I'm very disappointed.

And you should see the email that the former-seller has sent me... but I'll spare you.

Between a growing pan-ethnic patient base, the need to solve inequalities of care, and the clinical desirability of viewing clients in their entirety, applied cultural knowledge is emerging as a major goal of clinical and public health practice. Cultural Competence in Health Care offers a wealth of this crucial knowledge with emphasis on day-to-day clinical work. Authors Tseng and Streltzer, well-known experts on transcultural medicine and therapy, start by differentiating between disease and illness and advise on a range of practical matters, from discussing culturally sensitive subjects to negotiating compromises between traditional healing and established medicine, so that readers will gain both useful working techniques and valuable empathy with clients. Case studies highlight medical issues as they apply to various minority (and majority) groups, and eight insightful chapters reveal cultural dimensions expressed in:

• Concepts of illness and illness behaviors.
• Assessment, interviews, and symptom presentation.
• Hospitalization, medication, family involvement, consent issues.
• Highly charged medical areas, e.g., pain management, transfusions, reproductive issues, organ donation.
• Frequently stigmatized conditions such as AIDS, STDs, cancer, and psychiatric disorders.

About the Author

Wen-Shing Tseng, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine. He was born in Taiwan in 1935 and was trained in psychiatry at the National Taiwan University of Taipei and later at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center of Harvard Medical School in Boston. He was a research fellow in culture and mental health at the East-West Center from 1970-1971, before he was recruited as a faculty member of the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, where he became a professor in 1976 and has served as training director for the psychiatric residency training program between 1975-1982. Dr. Tseng is a consultant to the World Health Organization and served as chairman of the Transcultural Psychiatry Section of the World Psychiatric Association for two terms from 1983-1993. He has edited, co-edited and authored over a dozen books dealing with psychiatry, psychotherapy, and cultural psychiatry.

Jon Streltzer, MD, is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine where he was a training director from 1982-1996. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is board certified in general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and pain management. He has been Chair of the Chronic Pain Task Force of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, and is a member of the Pain Medicine Board Examination Committee of the American Board of Anesthesiologists. He has been on the editorial board of the International Journal of Psychiatry and Medicine and is a reviewer for several journals. Dr. Streltzer is widely published in the areas of psychosomatic medicine, pain, and cultural psychiatry.

18+ From fantasy to reality, a spilled coffee and a stuck elevator

This short erotic was quite a delightful surprise, an associate attorney at a high powered London law firm, with a crush on a senior partner uses a stuck elevator to daringly press her case and make her fantasy come true. Isabella has been watching and fantasizing about Catherine as long as she has been employed by the law firm. They both travel the tube every morning; Isabella's bright spot is the London Bridge station where Catherine boards the train.

From fantasy to reality, a spilled coffee and a stuck elevator and Isabella tests her luck, dominant and controlling she starts her plan for seduction. Blindfolding then requesting her submission, Catherine is teased, toyed with and brought to stunning heights. Told in Isabella's voice, her soft confidence, strength and determination are a change from most domination scene stories out there. Tessa Wanton has created an interesting twist with a character in Isabella who is refreshingly different from the characters we have come to know. From her endnotes, this is the first of a recurring series for her, and I look forward to see what else Isabella will get up to.

Sexy Read!

Isabella has fantasized about her boss Catherine forever. Each morning they walk to work at Canary Wharf, a financial district near the City of London and each day, Isabella dreams of having her. Isabella is out of her reach, a cool and aloof suit in a realm far, far above her. Then an elevator malfunction changes everything. The balance of power shifts and Isabella finds herself mastering her boss in a game of Domination and submission f/f style. This delightful interlude in an elevator was sexy and very, very hot. Tessa Wanton does a good job of building up the sexual tension and showing just how exciting it can be for a subordinate to top her boss.
The f/f scenes were juicy and full of discipline. Isabella wastes no time getting Catherine on her knees, making her beg for fulfillment. This is a short snack that is perfect for anyone who may have had a secret craving to teach their boss a thing or two. Naughty or nice, you decide. I for one will be reading more Tessa Wanton, especially if she has more f/f pieces like this one.

Bullies. Likeable or not. Redeemable or not.

Written in first person by Tod Munn, a petty bully who is book smart underneath his mean exterior. Tod suffers a detention that includes writing in a notebook everyday after school in a silent room with a silent proctor for several weeks.This school situation could be middle or high school; the kid could be of whatever race you imagine him to be.

Shulman writes very well. He gives Tod a believable teenage voice with the accompanying emotions. The only other character that "speaks" is the guidance counselor who supervises Tod's detention, and occasionally responds in writing in his journal.
All other characters in the book are seen through Tod's eyes, and yet the author aptly depicts them as complete individuals.

Although somewhat corny and contrived in spots, with rapid fire twists and turns at the end, the novel wraps up neatly, like a poem, making for a satisfying read. Once begun, it's a book you want to keep reading.

And, oh, yeah, we find out that the school is loaded with bullies besides Tod and his 'droogs'.

This is mostly billed as a YA book, but I would say it's good for grades 5+.

A Wonderful Book for Readers of All Ages

Scrawl by Mark Shulman is a great book and well worth reading and/or purchasing. As you know, I try to get all of my books for free through this blog, but if I were going to pay money for a book, I would pay money for this one. Sometimes you pay $16.99 for a book (Scrawl's cover price, which I looked up on my free copy) and you feel like you only got $8.99 worth of story. Not so here. I would say I got at least $50.97 worth of story, bare minimum, maybe more. That's three times the value, at least! So you should buy this book because it just makes economic sense. You can, of course, check with your local library as well. Also, is it just me, or do these reviews get a little sillier every week:)

Silly or not, I do have an obligation to tell you about this book and more, I want to. Meet Tod Munn. He's an overweight bully who extorts money from the weaker kids. I loved him and you will too. He's cynical to a degree, but there is a lot of truth to his observations about his school and about the world in general. As with the main character in Amy Reed's Beautiful, you likely won't agree with everything he thinks and says and on some things, you will likely vehemently disagree, but I feel that Tod's viewpoint is challenging and worth considering. Here's an early example:

What else is in the room? There's a cracked brown flower-pot with a dead stick in it. The stick was probably a plant. It's got a red ribbon hanging off it like you would find on the corner of a diploma or if you won the Spelling Bee. The ribbon says "Congratulations," but who the hell knows why? Congratulations, you finally got a low-paying teaching job. Congratulations, you retired and didn't die of boredom teaching the same idiocy to idiots who care less about what's in your mind than what's in your car. Congratulations, you just put your new plant on a baking-hot radiator in a room that overlooks a brick wall in a crappy part of town. Congratulations, we're entrusting you with the mascot of our school. It's a dead stick.

I can't tell you for sure how old Tod is. I've searched online and in the text, and I believe it's left intentionally vague. Nor can I tell you what grade Tod is in. He has to be in middle school or high school, which makes this book upper middle grade to young adult. I'm hoping Tod's age isn't specified somewhere as there will be egg on my face, but I'm 95% sure I'm right about this.

And even if I'm wrong, Tod felt like he could have been a few different ages, which is certainly not something that works in every book, but it works very well here. And the best thing is readers from all age groups are likely to see themselves in Tod. There is no content too adult and no swearing, except for the occasional opposite-of-heaven, he--double hockey sticks. There's nothing so bad younger readers shouldn't read it, nor will older readers find it condescending. Shulman has found a perfect way to market a book to everyone.

The reason it works is Tod himself is telling the story: This is my first book, and I'm writing it for one reason only. Not for history and not for scientific research and definitely not to let out my inner demons. I'm doing it so I don't have to pick up trash in the school courtyard like certain deviant so-called friends of mine who also got caught.
I am being reformed.

The situation is Tod and his buddies have done something very bad. What did they do? Esteemed Reader, you know I don't spoil books, but you find out late in the game. The entire story is told in excerpts from Tod written during his detention after this mystery event. There are occasionally comments from Mrs. Woodrow who asks Tod questions about the story to get us information he would otherwise have no reason to give us. It's a brilliant device and from a craft standpoint, it's one of the big reasons to read this book.

Writing in the first person is difficult for a number of reasons, most notably a limited perspective. More, it limits the writer somewhat in the language they can use, although most writers cheat their way around this. But If I were writing from the first person perspective of an eleven-year-old girl and I were to point out that a particular situation is a conundrum of paradoxical proportions, it begs some questions about what sort of eleven-year-old-girl I am pretending to be. Is the character a huge nerd who regularly speaks like this? If not, the phrasing is out of character and a misstep. To be fair, writing the phrase "a conundrum of paradoxical proportions" is likely a misstep in third person as well, unless the writer is being intentionally humorous;)

Most writers cheat to some degree, crossing over the line between character voice and prose worth reading regularly despite writing in the first person. The trick is not to get caught and it's a difficult balancing act, limiting oneself to the character's fixed perspective while still meeting the needs of the larger narrative. What Shulman has done for himself is to add in an extra layer of complexity by writing the story not only from the perspective of his main character, but also from the writing aptitude of this character. Writers, the book is worth reading just to see Shulman pull this off, and he does pull it off.

Do I really believe that this book was written by Tod Munn, who is under the age of eighteen? No. The spelling and the prose is too perfect for that, and I'm glad of it. Books that are written the way actual teenagers write (most of them) are usually worth quite a bit less than $16.99 and the prose would serve more as a distraction than anything else. Shulman wisely gives Tod an interest in books and a knack for English, particularly spelling, but it wasn't enough to fool me.

And yet the character of Tod does come through in these pages. I felt like I knew Tod by the end of the book. I felt like if I saw him somewhere I would know him. Because Shulman did pull off the most important trick of all: despite the obviously advanced writing, I did believe I was reading the voice of Tod, that somehow his spirit was intact within these pages.

How did Shulman pull this off? Esteemed Reader, if I knew, I'd tell you. It's an amazing performance and one I'll be studying for a time to figure out. If you are a writer as well, and I think most of you are, this is a book to study for character and voice. If you're a reader, here is a story you're gonna love and a character worth spending 230 pages with. I'm still thinking about him well after finishing.

"The only reason I'm giving you more," Nardine (lunch lady -MGN) muttered, hurling gobs of saucy meat onto every part of the plate, "is because I know what's in it. I can only hope it kills you."

I didn't have a clue what Rex was up to, but if it meant smacking some missionary in front of an old lady, or swiping that briefcase, their friends would empty the pews to get an eye for an eye.

Being mad at Bernie is like being mad at a dog. Both of them want to make you happy. Either one will make you crazy. Neither of them thinks of the consequences. And they both smell pretty bad in the rain.

They might try to shake some cigarette money out of me, but cigarettes are stupid expensive these days, and they know I don't have that kind of money.

Literate Bad Guy = Someone to Curl Up With

Scrawl puts you right inside the head of Tod Munn, a perpetually hungry, poor bully who survives his nasty rich kid/poor kid school by pretending to be dumber than he is. But as the book opens, this strategy isn't holding: he's in detention and given one last chance to convince a school counselor to let him stay at school. The journal he writes in detention--the explanation of his crimes--is the book Scrawl. As the book unfolds, we follow Tod through some excellent adventures, all of which build to a climax that feels transformative without being preachy. Shulman hits the tone just right. The author of over 50 children's books, Scrawl is Shulman's first YA. Talk about hitting it out of the park! Tod's voice and POV are distinctive and winning. But so's the artist/dramanerd/hyper-confident and competent Luz, the girl who doesn't fit it and so changes the school so that it can make room for her talents. These are some powerfully imaginative kids.

Briskly paced, laugh-out-loud funny but also a deep look into how a smart boy comes of age in a desolate home and school, Scrawl is peopled by Tod's characters who are fundamentally different from each other. Luz captures the imagination, with her peremptory but brilliant manner of getting everyone to act in her play. Tod's mom is harsh but kind of funny and *real.* Even the lousy lunch lady slopping meat sauce onto Tod's tray has a point-of-view, and Tod fields them all: the well-meaning school counselor, his "droogs" who, though they are his best friends, are too dumb really to know him, and the English teacher who pretends to be Tod's friend only to . . . . . So much happens in this book! I could go on forever. Instead, I salute Mark Shulman, author of my favorite YA novel. Ever.
