Will Tipton began playing poker online in 2007. He steadily moved up in stakes in online HUNL tournaments to become a regular winner in the high stake games. He currently lives in Ithaca, NY, and is a PhD candidate at Cornell University.

Brilliant groundbreaking book. Could change the game.

I have probably over 30 poker books sitting on my shelf, which I've read. This book stands out from all of the others being incredibly original and deep.
You need to read this book slowly and deeply, to get the most out of it. He continuously casually drops big ideas, which you could miss if you're not careful.
Also, calling the book "Heads Up" is somewhat bad marketing. I'm a heads-up player, but certainly non-heads-up players should take big interest in this book. Too often at a full table you get into heads-up situations, and this range-vs-range thinking is very applicable to any such heads-up situation.
He gives convincing arguments about the math of "check-to-the-raiser", and when it is or isn't appropriate (depends on the flop). This goes along with arguments about when to C-Bet (again, depends purely on the flop). He gives convincing arguments for block-betting, and convinced me that I don't do it often enough and it's a clear leak in my game. As well he gives arguments about thinking about the required frequency for trapping. It's too easy in soft passive games to not maintain the right trapping frequency, since pushing value is so clear in softer games. But in tough games, some hands should trap rather than push value (since your tough opponent should be properly aggressive to your check).
I will read this book again. The 8 examples that evolve from shallow (estimating ranges) to deep analysis (finding best range play) as the book progresses, end up with truly surprising results at the end of the book.
I've only seen 2 other books in this genre, showing Game-Theory-Optimal analysis: Bill Chen's "Mathematics of Poker", followed by Colin Moshman's headsup book. Both are great books, but this book has definately surpassed them and taken the thinking to another level.

Advanced Analysis for Heads Up Hold'em

This is a pretty amazing book. To provide some perspective, if poker analysis was offered as a college degree, this would no doubt be the text book of choice for the class on heads up play.
This book is highly theoretical, and provides a framework for making real-play decisions. That being said, don't expect sections on "how to play against loose-aggressive players." It just isn't that type of book.
I think a lot of the Moshman book on heads up play. ("Heads-Up No-Limit Hold'em") However, Moshman is more of a primer compared to this book. Moshman is full of "practical" advice, but the Tipton book is highly theoretical. Both books are good, but very different in style and approach. My guess is that the "average" poker player will require 2 or 3 reads of the Tipton book just to understand it....and additional reads in order to extract full value.
If you want a somewhat breezy intro to heads up play, read Moshman. But if you have read Moshman and now seek a mathematical, theory-based approach to heads up play, then get the Tipton book. I readily recommend the book, but only to those individuals who stand ready to devote the "study time" required to understand this text.

Very intriguing book about how to play heads up poker using a variety of mathematical approaches. Chapter 4 and beyond had many neat applications that I hadn't seen in print before. Looking forward to volume 2 (particularly the recursion portion).
