About the Author
GEORGE T. GEIS teaches at UCLA Anderson in the areas of corporate business development and entrepreneurship. He has been voted Outstanding Teacher of the Year at UCLA Anderson five times. Currently, he is faculty director of Anderson's Mergers and Acquisitions Executive program. Geis has also taught mergers and acquisitions at the Haas School, University of California, Berkeley.

I would highly recommend this book to technology bankers, entrepreneurs, and VCs.

Very informative, well-written and well-researched, but more like a HBS research report than a business book.
First, I'd like to point out that there are very few technology M&A books, and well-written ones are certainly rare. This is one of the best out there. It covers most M&A topics, including strategy, target screening, structuring, and integration. While most books cover these topics as well, they are really just repeating the same thing over and over again. This book focuses on Google and uses the acquired companies, such as Youtube, Android, DeepMind, DoubleClick, and many other not so famous ones as examples. I read this book about Ciscos, and the author was like "Ok Cisco bought this for this reason." That book was boring and I don't think the author did any research. So I returned that one without finishing it. But for this book, I can tell that the in-depth research has taken years to accumulate and I think Geis' work justifies the price. This is also why I'm volunteering to write this review. I think this book deserves recognitions.
Second, it compares Google's M&A strategy to Apple's. While Geis doesn't spend much time on Apple's strategy, the book gives you just enough details to see the two ends of tech M&A: Google acquires anything (and now it's a tech conglomerate) and has no problem with billion dollar acquisitions, while Apple has a more focused strategy, usually after the technology or patent that can be integrated into an Apple product.
But this book has two weaknesses which is why I'm giving it a 4 instead of 5. It doesn't discuss much about valuation. It contains examples of previous transactions, including price, terms, and results. But it doesn't tell you how did Google come up with the valuation. Of course, how Google valued the companies is not public information at all. But I'd like to see a small chapter dedicated to this topic since tech M&A valuation is ambiguous. Also, this book is more like a research report than a business book. So it's not going to be a book that you can keep on flipping. It's more like a reference book that you should keep in your office and take it out when you bump into related problems.
I would highly recommend this book to technology bankers, entrepreneurs, and VCs. College professors can include this book as an optional text for their M&A courses.
